For all the 300 fans out there who have been holding their breath for the next great gladiator epic that would rock their world and keep them on edge, it’s sad to say you will be waiting for a little longer.
2011's Immortals details the adventures of young Theseus as he battles to locate the ultimate weapon of mass destruction before the evil King Hyperion. Both search for a bow with the power to release the Titans from their imprisonment and release great destruction on both man and gods.
The film, which stars Mickey Rourke as the vicious King Hyperion, does possess some of the luster of 2006’s 300. There are ripped men in tiny shorts and slow motion fight scenes that deliver the best guts and gore that all of the best fight scenes feature. But the film leaves much to be desired.
There is no consistency in behavior of the characters. At the worst moments, Stephen Dorff (who plays Stavros) breaks character and becomes less of a Greek thief and more of a hoodlum on the streets of some modern day city. Henry Cavill, our lead, Theseus, delivers a speech before a major battle that becomes more of a boring rant then anything inspirational.
The film sadly lacks. It gets its best performances from Rourke, who displays the cruelty of the legendary King Hyperion beautifully, from scaring and castrating a defective to setting a priest on fire after denouncing the power of the gods. His portrayal of the King Hyperion will certainly make his character a villain of legends.
Still, Rourke's character cannot save the film. It just does not live up to hype. For those of you who were dying to see the film, wait. This is a wait for it to be featured on cable television kind of film.
I, like I’m sure so many others, had really high hopes for this film, but was sadly disappointed from beginning to end.
