Katy Perry Is A Bubblegum Pop Princess

She’s just like candy, except real. Since Katy Perry hit mainstream, there is no doubt that the 26-year-old can do a pop. When “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot ‘n’ Cold” hit our radio stations two summers, we couldn’t help but turn up the volume a little bit louder. But then suddenly, it was silent and for a while there we might have even thought that she was but another one-hit wonder. Then this summer came her smash hit single “California Gurls” and from then on, we knew that this was no fluke: Katy Perry was here to stay.

“Teenage Dream”, her much anticipated follow up album to “One of the Boys”, was released this Tuesday. And just like that came 11 more pop-alicious tunes we could add onto our i-pods. With “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, we get a delicious sinful taste of that bad girl side of hers that slightly reminds of us of newcomer Ke$ha. Gwen Stefani-like “Peacock” gives us the fun 80’s pop song that we could envision us girls singing and dancing to, while wearing our pink flip flops and sucking on our lollipops. At the same time, Perry lets us in with “The One That Got Away” – a song we can all relate to when reminiscing about the person we regret letting go.

Although Perry wears the crown quite well of an electro-pop princess, by the end of the album, the songs start to blend in with each other. All the amusing beats and carefree lyrics begin to form one long and somewhat tiring song. The only exception is two ballads that seem but to just hide an otherwise powerful and melodic voice we all know Perry has under all the moaning and cooing.

Still, one thing is for sure: Perry proves in “Teenage Dream” that she is more than just a one-hit wonder. With songs that can match up with pop princesses like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Perry makes us want summer to go on just a bit longer, so we can kick our heals up high, let the sun shine while eating some of that sweet and tasty candy.
