Kyng Review: 'Trampled Sun'

Able to Stand Among the Rest

The California-born rock band, Kyng, is releasing its first album, Trampled Sun, on September 27, 2011. The band mixes a grunge-tastic and familiar hard rock sound in the album, creating a platform for a new form of teenage angst.

Kyng, formed in 2008, consists of three embodiments of talent. Singer Eddie Veliz adds a certain familiar sound to the band which I cannot put my finger on, as does the instrumentals. Kyng’s sound is distinct, but will easily blend into the background of the less popular hard rock in time. Quite possibly, it is just the wrong time in the music scene for Kyng to release such a refined heavy California rock sound, which is unfortunate. The songs are quite catchy.

When I first listened to the album, it sounded like a bunch of noise; however, I decided to give it a second go. Kyng thoroughly impressed me. West coast rock has the grunge that teenage angst thrives on. In all seriousness, Kyng wanted me to give “the bird” to my speakers.

This band will prove with the release of its first album that it can stand among the greatest including its idols: Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. The music, surprisingly, has dynamics, which I find a pleasant surprise for the first album. At times, Veliz’s voice grows quieter, letting the guitar take the spotlight, or sometimes Kyng stops suddenly altogether and then regains the powerful guitar riffs and vocals to give the listener his or her biggest audio climax of a lifetime.

Kyng has been touring with Black Stone Cherry and Pop Evil. Black Stone Cherry, from personal experience, is a great band to see live and hopefully Kyng is just the same. Kyng’s grunge guitar style is almost a replica to Black Stone Cherry’s. Pop Evil, led by Leigh Kakaty, has the vocal control and superb dynamics just like Kyng.

My personal favorite off the album Trampled Sun is the first track, “Falling Down.” Be sure to check the album as soon as it’s released, and if you do not like it the first time, try it again! You will be convinced that Kyng has the ability to shine on the rock scene.
