'The Last Airbender'

Film is boring and lifeless, despite stunning special effects

M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, The Last Airbender, is based off of the first season of the hit Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Thankfully, the "Avatar" was dropped from the film in order to keep audiences from comparing it to James Cameron's blockbuster success of that name. In Avatar, Cameron succeeded in creating a world that feels realistic and a story that captivates audiences of all ages.

Shyamalan, however, failed to do either. The world of The Last Airbender will be confusing to any viewers not familiar with the television series, and the film's story isn't interesting enough to make viewers care about any of the characters.

The film revolves around Aang, a young boy who is destined to fulfill his duties as Avatar and return peace to a war-torn world. This world is split into four Nations - Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

Some members of each nation are "benders" - individuals with the power to control the element of the nation they were born into. The special effects involved in portraying the "bending" throughout the film are admittedly breathtaking, but they aren't enough to distract audiences from the often ridiculous plot.

One of the film's biggest disappointments comes from Dev Patel, who plays the antagonist Prince Zuko. Patel won over audiences in 2008 with his Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, but his performance in this film is mediocre at best.

The Last Airbender is intended to be the first in a trilogy, but after recieving negative reviews from nearly every critic out there (Rotten Tomatoes reports that only 8% of critics have given the film positive reviews), hopefully no further Airbender films will be made.
