Amanda Abizaid’s This Life is one of this year’s more interesting releases.
“Blue Star Red Sky” is an odd opening track, with its whirlwind of erratic sounds and
Abizaid both reciting and singing her lyrics. The tracks that follow “Wash Me” and “Undivided” are better indications of Abizaid’s sound with their fresh combinations of pop, jazz and Middle Eastern music.
“This Life”, which is the only track in which Abizaid co-wrote with Marty Shallain, is the
best track with its honest and poignant lyrics (“Payin my dues in the heartland/Too many
one-night stands/All alone on the stage like blood on the page/And it’s all for you/Every
song I sing is all about you”). The song is also a refreshing slant on the road song that
are often done by male artists.
Abizaid is also admirable for her multi-tasking. She not only sings and writes but plays the flute as well. Her vocals are so crisp and warm that it feels like she’s singing directly to you. Her songs never go at marathon lengths or end abruptly.
Amanda Abizaid can easily be compared to artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Brandi Carlisle and even Bjork, but she still has her own sound. Some may dismiss Abizaid as another former model trying to make it as a singer, but Abizaid actually has the talent to make a name for herself in music.
