Melodic and Modern

Matt Knapil

FivePlay Jazz Quintet is a brand new group that has just released their self-titled debut and it is indeed something worth listening to. All the members have their own successful careers, and it’s always nice to see some friends gather together to create some good music.

This album has the amazing ability to bridge the gap between experienced jazz-listeners, and the inexperienced ones. Their melodic and harmonic intricacies both are familiar and fresh. Their rhythms are bold and fun. Basically it’s an album of contradictions and agreements.

Though there are a few mistakes that can be heard whether it is intonation, or the cut-offs and entrances don’t exactly match, it is still an album worth listening to.

All the songs are originals and they are all pleasing and interesting. Take the first track “Off the Ground.” It starts off ethereal, and spacey before crashing through the atmosphere and soaring through the clouds at the perfect pace.

I would recommend this album to everyone.
