Blessid Union of Souls' latest album The Mission Field has the familiar rock-pop feel of their previous records, but with a refocused spirituality emphasizing God much like their first album Home. Blessid Union of Soul's is most famous for their hit single in 1995 "I Believe," and continues to attract fans for their inspirational lyrics and rhythmic melodies.
While the previous albums had underlying pious subtext, The Mission Field is full of obvious references to Christianity and god. Lead singer Eliot Sloan’s sincerity and personal attachment to his Christian faith robustly translate into the vocals on the album. “Pray For You” is about a missing loved ones, with emphasis on soldiers at war and praying for them. The chorus literally says “I’m gunna pray for you, I’m gunna wait for you until you’re in my arms.” The single “The Mission Field” has a slow tempo and asking god to guide one on the right mission in life. Sloan’s crescendo of held notes give the song’s meaning depth with the beat and backdrop music secondary.
“Miracles” has a more a popish vibe with, pronounced melody of guitar strumming, faster beat, and love references. It is a safe bet for a single, the lyrics “There’s nothing quite like the beautiful sound of love, love is a miracle” are very catchy. On the other hand, “Higher Calling” goes deeper into the rock direction with a harder and deeper sound. Sloan sings the words in a faster meter, almost spoken.
Overall The Mission Field does not disappoint. The tracks range from inspirational cries to God, celebrating the joys of love, and overcoming everyday struggles; a common thread throughout is the strong religious references and power faith beholds. Furthermore, The Mission Field does not hit the listener head on as a typical gospel or religious album. Blessid Union of Souls brilliantly continue to attract listeners by combining pop-rock melodies with heartfelt encouraging lyrics.
