Just the name of the single, “My Bed,” should indicate what kind of song this is: unsubtle and derivative. Here’s how uncreative it is: Mario had previously released a song called “Lay in my Bed.” That’s right, his handlers were so lazy they ripped off the title from his own song.
As far as mainstream R & B goes, Mario’s latest single is not ear-grating, but it’s also not particularly original or catchy. As one would expect, Mario sings about wanting to bed a woman, offering horrible lines as “Girl…undress!” and “Here they come with bottle what you want in your cup?”
It also takes too many cues from his best-selling single, “Break Up.” Random people shout “OH!” in the background for no reason in “My Bed,” just like they do in “Break Up,” and both songs have the main vocals and hooks sung in a breathy whisper-chant which is more creepy than exciting. Even the beat is similar, though the production tries to hide it. If you try singing the chorus of “Break Up” during the chorus of “My Bed,” the words match the beat all too well.
Still, “My Bed” works for what it is: a sex song a wild party-goer can listen to. Those looking for a trashy pop song should get their money’s worth…but people who want music that sounds like it actually has effort put into it should run away as quickly as they can.
