Not a Box, by Antoinette Portis, is a well-deserved Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book. Bursting with originality and creativity, Portis wonderfully inspires and entices the imaginations of young readers with Not a Box. With an adorable bunny protagonist and wonderful creativity, all who read this story will fall in love with it.
Not a Box is a story revolving around a little bunny and a rectangular box. However, the box is not really a box. The narrator wants to know why is the bunny sitting in, standing on, spraying, wearing, or on the box. However, the only answer the bunny has is that it is not a box. Rather, it is a racecar, a mountain, a burning building-the possibilities are endless. But let it be known that that rectangular box is not really a box. In fact, 'it's NOT NOT NOT NOT a box!'
The bunny's representation of a child using his or her imagination is right on target. Just as children are easily able to turn something simple into something extraordinary to play with, the bunny's creativity is not lacking either.
Not a Box is a wonderful example of how so much can stem from something simple. Not a Box is easily a timeless classic. Simple, yet highly imaginative, it would be impossible for this book to get old.
