Honeydripper is the soundtrack to the 2007 film of the same name, written and directed by John Sayles. The movie takes place in rural Alabama in 1950, when Jim Crow still rules the South and rock and roll is born out of the blues and gospel music. The early beginnings of rock can be heard in songs like "Move It on Over," "Good Rockin' Tonight" and "China Doll" and gospel is heard in "You Got to Choose," while the blues also have a strong presence on the album with the harmonica and sad tone of "Stack O Lee" and the repetition of phrases in the lyrics of "Bertha May," among other songs. Honeydripper features Danny Glover as the owner of the Honeydripper Lounge, the source of the film's title. A number of talented musicians perform on the soundtrack album, including Arthur Lee Williams, Eddie Shaw, Mable John and Gary Clark, Jr., who makes his film debut in Honeydripper as a guitarist named Sonny. If you enjoy music from the very early days of rock, like the blues or gospel music, then try listening to the Honeydripper soundtrack.
