My introduction to Jazz music was John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", so naturally, bop is favorite genre of Jazz. The Pamela Hines Trio's new record "Return", may not be up to Coltrane's standards, but this is a very good disc. It has all the elements of some of the older jazz trios, not just in numbers, but even in the way they play off each other.
On the title track, the saxophonist is allowed room to "breath", and it doesn't sound like he's in the way, or they made room for him to solo. It just sounds natural. Same when it's time for the other solos. The swing of "Very" is "very" infectious, as are the grooves of the rest of the album. Good jazz by a good, up and coming trio.
