'Run' single: Review

“Run,” the latest single released by the music duo, the Knux, features Kid Cudi. It also sounds like effort was actually put into its production, which is amazing for a hip-hop song.

“Run” is fairly catchy and sounds good. It probably helps that actual music and singing is added to the song. There are very audible, polished percussion and string sounds throughout the song, so it’s not just a mish-mash of random electronics. The whistling sounds added through the song are pretty and fun to listen to, and the duo Knux have good vocals that harmonize well.

The lyrics are weaker. The song is about a narrator who’s so proud of his “dick” that he’s certain his girlfriend will always come back to him no matter how far she runs. It’s a crude, wish-fulfillment song for men who just broke up with their girlfriends, but since the Knux and Cudi are waiting for their girlfriends to return instead of chasing them against their will, they manage to sound pompous without being creepy.

There are, however, random pop culture references like “You the only one like Obi Kenobi” and “You got me hooked like Peter Pan.” The similes sound like a shoe-horned attempt to make the song “cooler” and not all of them make sense. They do realize that Peter Pan defeats Captain Hook and Wendy decides to leave Peter and Neverland forever, right? It completely contradicts what they’re singing about.

Still, in a world with both Pitbull and Kanye West, these can hardly be called the worst lines to hit the market. The song is catchy with musical talent behind it, it’s not ridiculously stupid or offensive, and it serves as good wish-fulfillment for its target demographic.
