The Sea, The Sea

JC Chute

As might be surmised from the title, the sea is a thematic focal point of this CD from the talented Solomon's Seal, as many of the tracks convey the feel of floating or drifting on an ocean, searching for redemption in an ocean of lost souls.

Track after track strikes a sad yet hopeful note, balancing longing and loss with inspiration and cheer. There is beautiful guitar work, and powerful lyrics are delivered in a near-whisper, a la Nick Drake or even Tom Waits, which works well for many of the compositions.

This CD addresses themes related to self-esteem and self-worth, and many of the songs have a stunningly powerful vocal delivery, reminiscent of the work of Peter Gabriel. "Diamond in the Sand" is a standout for its poetry, describing with beautiful imagery the story of two lovers searching for a lost ring on the ocean floor.

While many of the songs are similar in tone and style, they are such stellar compositions that listeners will not feel they lack for anything. Beautiful, sparse, wistful, and near perfect, The Sea, The Sea is a marvel from start to finish.
