Six
Six is an album by Gretchen Witt who grew up in Ohio, but at the tender age of 18, made the jaunt to New York to fulfill her dreams. Her vocals have been compared to the likes of Natalie Merchant and country songstress Alison Krauss. However Witt has her own brash style that will mystify listeners through the whole record.
The first song has a pop, rock and country vibe to it as Witt emotes about the results of her actions and how, even though she knew what they would be, she could not stop herself. "I knew what the consequence was. I knew what the consequence was. I knew what the consequence was but I went and did it anyway. I knew how high the price was/I knew I shouldn't have gone."
The fourth song begins with ripping guitar riffs, while Witt expounds about why she seems to run from finding everlasting love. "I don't know why I asked you/I don't know if I'm looking for love so many times it has come. It has come. And I run and I run." It sounds as though Witt has experienced affection numerous times, but in each instance she has chosen to flee from it and is asking listeners for a reason why that might be.
The sixth song changes tone a bit with slow acoustic guitar strumming where each specific chord can be heard. Witt seems at her wits end and unsure of her next course of action. "If you still say so, then say so, just say so. If you can't give as much as/If you don't know what come next the truth will do the best." Witt seems to be questioning her beloved's true feelings for her and is saying if he is not totally committed to their relationship he should be upfront and tell her instead of stringing her along.
"Six," from Gretchen Witt, is an album that has upbeat songs about heartache that some listeners will find inspiring. Her vocals are expressive, and they allow her to showcase her true intentions in song. Many of the tracks have an empowering pace that will invigorate listeners to heed Witt's advice -- to move on with their lives and not look back.
