Some Other Time, Diane Schuur's first release since 2005's Schuur Fire, is an attempt to stifle criticisms that the singer has lost her jazz sensibility. Walking a fine line between pop and traditional jazz, Diane Schuur is an impressive singer and pianist, and this collection of songs is sure to please fans of both genres. A charming mix of classic songs by some of the finest American songwriters, such as George and Ira Gershwin, whose works appear twice on the album, this collection is full of songs you're probably familiar with, but you've never heard them performed this way before. An easy listen, the complexity of the music may be lost on some listeners, but if you pay attention to the piano solos, you'll be impressed. Vocally, Schuur is considered a national treasure and it's easy to see why. She handles the challenging material with grace, showcasing her impressive abilities, but never at the expense of the melody. I recommend this album for jazz fans, and fans of classic American songwriters.
