Sophie Milman
The 21-year old Russian jazz songstress commands respect with her soulful, sultry voice and great production. What was a pleasant surprise from this Koch Recording artist is that she sings in another language. She migrated to Canada three years ago and has not only picked up French, but can sing in the romantic language also. The first song "Agua De Beber" and selection #11 "Ochi Cherney (Dark Eyes)" sounds Russian. Sophie gives a new name to this jazz category and it's inspiring. The album is produced by Canadian Jazz patriarch Bill King and Danny Greenspoon. One can tell throughout the album that Sophie has great voice command and physical presence that gets the attention of anyone looking on stage. For example, track #4 "My Baby Just Cares For Me", #8 "I Feel Pretty" this is a re-mix from West Side Story.
Each of these tracks could melt a strong jazz lover and get the attention of someone with how strong and seductive she sounds. Another favorite is selection #10 "My Heart Belongs to Daddy", where she sounds so sweet and convincing at the same time. This is a combination of a solo jazz artist voice over classical, big band saxophone-type music with some contemporary jazz mixed in. The only downside to Sophie is youth and experience in the field. Once she completely develops and grows, she will be one of the best in jazz field.
