'Spartacus: Vengeance' - 'The Greater Good' Recap

Matthew Dagen

Episode three of Spartacus: Vengeance starts off with a nice little blood bath, with Spartacus and his men dispatching a group of Romans who were taking slaves to the mines. As one Roman lay on the ground hoping to be spared by Agron and Nacir, he tells them of Naevia and her whereabouts. Agron kills the Roman, and reports that Neavia is dead.

Oenomaus has yet to say a word since Ashur brought him to Glaber. Glaber doesn't exactly think this a victory, and is weary of Ashur, knowing what he's done in the past for Batiatus. He has Ashur slice the brand of Batiatus of his arm to prove his new found loyalty.

Spartacus consoles Crixus about the loss of Naevia. Crixus asks Spartacus how he managed to keep living once his wife had died, and Spartacus responds with his inner self had died that day too. The rebels begin to fight amongst themselves about the new plan: to head up the coast to the port cities to recruit new men.

Crixus emerges to help stop the fighting. He tells them that loss is what is keeping them all going. He agrees with Spartacus that they need to free every slave so no one else has to shaw Naevia's fate.

In Capua, Ashur takes Oenomaus' former whip against him in an effort to get him to talk about Spartacus. He still remains silent. As Ashur begins to try and beat the information out of his former Doctore, Lucretia appears and stops him. She tells Ashur to look for the secrets within the walls, whatever that may mean. Ashur then reminds Lucretia that it was him, not the Gods, who saved her from certain death during the massacre at the end of the first season.

As the rebels are readying to leave the villa they seized, Crixus helps Nacir with his trunk, saying he didn't trust him at first due to him being a Syrian, the same nationality as Ashur. When Crixus extends his arm to shake Nacir's hand, a worried look comes over Nacir's face. He tells Crixus the secret he and Agron had been keeping.

Crixus rushes after Agron, tackles him and tells him he'll kill him. Spartacus gets between the two, then Crixus yells for all to hear that Neavia is alive, and Agron was keeping that from him. Agron says he did it for the good of everyone, but Spartacus disagrees. He asks Agron what he'd do if it were his brother instead of Naevia. Agron refuses to die in pursuit of Naevia, and takes anyone who wants to go with him up the coast as according to the plan.

The next morning, Oenomaus is still remaining silent, when Ashur starts telling him about all the secrets he knows that occurred in the house of Batiatus. He talks about how he knew of the affair between Crixus and Naevia and the real reason behind Oenomaus' wife's death (from the prequel season Spartacus: Gods of the Arena). He goes on that his wife and Gannicus (champion of the house of Batiatus during Gods of the Arena) were also having an affair, and she had died drinking poisoned wine that was meant for Batiatus.

Oenomaus finally speaks, saying that they will find her, referring to Naevia, before anything can be done about it. Ashur realizes he is talking about Naevia, and realizes that's why Spartacus is moving south, knowing she is in the mines.

Spartacus, Crixus, Nacir, Mira and a handful of other men arrive at the mines. Mira offers herself to the foreman and once in the tent, pulls his knife and threatens to chop off his manhood if he doesn't tell her where Naevia is. He obliges, then turns the tables on Mira, and a struggle ensues. She eventually slices his arm, then stabs him repeatedly in the neck. Meanwhile, another guard recognizes Spartacus from the arena, so the rebels kill that guard and go after Naevia with the map Mira procured.

Glaber's men arrive at the mines, with Ashur in tow. Ashur pops out of formation and kills two guards, who turn out to be former gladiators under Batiatus. Ashur knows Spartacus is at the mines.

While going through the mines, Nacir spots the mark of Lucretia on the back of a slave. Crixus runs up to Naevia and the two share a long awaited embrace. As they are hugging, another of the rebels comes in and starts to say that Romans have arrived when he's stabbed from behind. Crixus sees Ashur and we see the rage of the former champion of Capua coming through.

Most of the men have escaped as the Romans are closing in when Crixus turns to Spartacus and tells him to get Naevia out of there, that he'll hold them off. Crixus holds off the Romans long enough for Spartacus to get Naevia out of harm's way and through the gate to the exit. Just as the lock is set, Crixus is stuck with a knife through his back and Ashur knocks him on the head with the butt of his sword as the episode ends.
