The Spirit

Frank Miller's "The Spirit" visually stunning, but shallow in depth.

If you are a fan of comic strips, or their adaptations on the big screen, then The Spirit is one movie you should see; if you're not a fan of comic books and vigilantism, then this isn't the film for you.

Set in fictional Central City, slain police officer Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) walks the streets at night as a superhero known only to the authorities as "The Spirit." He finds his archenemy, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), at the Central City mud flats seeking a great treasure. At the same time, a femme fatale, Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), is searching for the same treasure. This search for the treasure causes the three to collide in an epic battle for Central City.

This film was visually stunning. The noir style of director Frank Miller was absolutely incredible. If you enjoy films for their visual effects, this is one that will not disappoint you at all. One thing I didn't like, however, is that it seemed as if there was too much focus on the visual effects, and not enough on the plot of the film. The plot was shallow and only focused on some of the main aspects of the original comic strip. The spirit was transformed from comic book hero to an everyman in a cape, which is not how he should have been portrayed.

The Spirit gave a good effort to try and bring Will Eisner's comic strip to life on the big screen. However, if you're expecting the film to follow the plot of the comic strip, be forewarned that it does not.
