'Supermegafantastic' Album Review

My Nguyen

IAMDYNAMITE’s raw energy and chancy vocals in their debut album, Supermegafantastic is able to elicit, even from the most indisposed human being, the primal spirit that warily circumspects our daily existence.

On Supermegafantastic, the duo comprised of Chris Martin and Chris Phillips, is only armed with a simple electric guitar and drum kit. Add in some psychedelic guitar riffs, an infectious drum back-beat, and an uncontrollable dance hook, and you got IAMDYNAMITE’s formula for success. It’s that simple. Yet C^2 manages to pull off their sound, which is best described as “2 guys that sound like 5,” with finesse. Other than their tendencies for overly verbose one worded connectors that are meant to be said all at once, it is surmised that IAMDYNAMITE’s unique style will dissolve any impulsive resolve to toss them over at the backburner.

This expletive approach to both their album and band moniker does have a tendency to throw people off. I mean, really, who do these guys think they are – trying to amend themselves into the English dictionary by pulling a Mary Poppins? And as comical as all this sounds – it almost makes you want you to swear off Supermegafantastic for that very reason – but swearing off the two Chris’ won’t release you from the catchy vocals and danceable hooks that are able to grab your attention from the get-go.

The music alone gets a little repetitive after a while. And while IAMDYNAMITE has the fervored energy of a good band, their “less is more” approach can get tiresome. After a while you start to phase out as the predictions gets too easy - something you'd never wish on a band.

But what can be said about IAMDYNAMITE’s raw sound in Supermegafantastic is that the duo’s chanting style for vocals is made for audience participation. The ritual-like way the vocals are shouted loud and clear and the simple chord structures, makes singing along easily accessible. While their record needs a bit of tweaking structure-wise, you definitely get a sense for IAMDYNAMITE’s live sound in this album.

Currently out now, see for yourself what IAMDYNAMITE’s Supermegafantastic is all about. Or if you want to check them out live, IAMDYNAMITE is currently on tour with Blue October.
