After reading Thank You Notes by Jimmy Fallon and the writers of Late Night in about five minutes, I’ve realized this is part of a new generation of novels, a whole new genre. If you’ll allow, I am going to coin a new phrase for this: Tweet Books. Thank You Notes, along with Denis Leary’s recent release, Suck on This Year (a collection of tweets by Leary), is a new form of writing, where each page contains a short, less then 150 character passage, that quickly gets to the point/laugh; much like a Twitter update.
That being said, I’d hate to drag this review out longer then the “Twitter Book” itself, so let’s get to it, in less than 150 characters of course.
As an adaptation of the popular bit from his Late Night show, Jimmy Fallon and company have written a series of “Thank You Notes,” addressed to random people, places, and things in this universe. He comments on reality television, people who walk too slowly on the sidewalk, and basically anything you can think of. He complains, he whines, and he mocks his way through this hilarious collection.
The book opened strong, with a commentary on the word, “Moist.” I found this note especially brilliant, as I have for years wondered why anyone would allow that word to enter every day language. It just sounds gross. (Go ahead, say it out loud and not feel icky, I dare you!).
When I say it opened strong, don’t be misinformed. It stayed strong until the very final page. He facetiously issued a thank you to slowpokes who get in your way, and even mentioned penile cancer in a clever commentary.
I’ll allow you to read it for yourself and not ruin the surprises, but in all, this book was great fun. It was hilarious, and relatable. It was a very quick read, and you don’t have to remember any sort of back stories or characters, so you can read as much or as little as you want in one sitting. But trust me, once you start, you won’t put it down, it’s one of those books!
