'Walls Come Down' single: Review

Victoria Meng

Keke Palmer is currently the star of the Nickolodeon TV show, True Jackson, VP. Like other stars of musical-based children’s sitcoms, Keke is currently churning out run-of-the-mill pop music that ranges from palatable to muddling.

If it is any consolation, her voice sounds strong behind the auto-tune in her latest single, “Walls Come Down,” but why distort her voice like that? Auto-tune is best used for achieving catchy sounds and vocals that are hard to create naturally. Here, the auto-tune underplays Keke’s vocal strengths without actually creating a distinct sound. Her voice is just blurred into the production, and sounds full of static.

The production itself is rather repetitive. The same beats and notes and sounds repeat themselves over and over again. Being a children’s song, the lyrics here aren’t offensive, but they contain clichés like “I’m gonna live it up” and “DJ turn it up." Even the title itself is a cliche.

In short, this song is okay for children, but there are party songs that are more energetic and songs in general that are more innovative.
