Wanted

Mixed feelings about one of the summer's biggest action films.

The movie follows Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), an insignificant nobody who hates his job and whose girlfriend is having an affair with his best friend. He is picked up by Fox (Angelina Jolie); told that his father, whom he never met, was killed; and brought to the home of a secret Fraternity of assassins, led by Sloan (Morgan Freeman). Like his father, a former member of the Fraternity, he has special abilities to react to things much quicker than the average person, and to curve a bullet around an object to shoot something behind it. As the Fraternity trains him, he gains confidence and power, begins standing up for himself and, for once in his life, feels like he is fulfilling his destiny. In a shocking turn of events, the movie presents a moral quandary and leaves the viewer wondering if they really know what the truth is. The movie is directed by Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov of Night Watch and Day Watch, and is adapted from a comic book miniseries by Mark Millar. True to its comic book roots, Wanted features slow motion and animated action. While it is understandable that this action is somewhat unrealistic, it almost goes beyond the realm of fantasy and into the realm of yeah right. James McAvoy is excellent and his character is convincing, likeable and relatable. I might have liked more depth to Angelina Jolie's character, and I wonder if her sex appeal was overused. However, obviously, she is amazing to watch on screen no matter what she is doing and can make the best out of any character. It is the type of movie that, if analyzed, is flawed to the point where some things may not make sense. However, overall, it is extremely entertaining and funnier that most action movies I've seen.
