We All Go Home
Sometimes, it's true. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. John Bonham Jr. is playing drums at the Led Zepplin reunion show. Both Sean and Julian Lennon are both accomplished musicians (oh God/what does this mean for Bobby and Whitney's kids?)
Well, add Crosby Loggins, son of Mr. Footloose Kenny Loggins to the list of talented offspring. "We All Go Home," his debut album with band The Light is a mix of rock, folk, funk and even a little country. There are two things that set the band apart from the majority of today's newer rock bands. The first is Loggins' penchant for smart lyrics (obviously inherited from his father). "Radio Song," a song with a slight new-country flavor about leaving the one he loves, shows his knack for story telling. "I know this city like the back of my hand, but I sit in my apartment all day/There's a darker mind nearly all of the time that's in the way/She knows my heart like a work of fine art, and I love her like a Tennessee breeze/I've been all caught up, but for all of life, I gotta leave."
The band gets political on the inspired "March On, America." "Mr. Machine" Loggins sings, "I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to say what I've seen/ these politics are gonna be the end of humanity" and "I see what you do/illegal aint illegal if it's good enough for you." They manage to be topical without coming across clich?'. Clever couplings like this can be found throughout the rest of the album.
The second thing that sets them apart is their ability to weave four different genres of music into one perfect blend, most notably on "Wanna Be You." Starting off with a funky wah-wah that would make Billy Preston proud, they bring in a Dave Matthews-esque violin, followed by a rolling bass line, Ben Folds type piano chops and Crosbys' sweet-and-sour vocals to make what may be the best song on the album.
All in all, "We All Go Home" is a very enjoyable album from a promising band. Let's just hope Crosby can stay on the "I'm Alright" side of his father's legacy and not fly into the "Danger Zone."
