Wendy and Lisa's "White Flags of Winter Chimneys" pushes boundaries of conventional contemporary music to challenge listeners to think outside the box.
"Ever After" is somewhat depressing in its message, although the composition does have an interesting experimental vibe, bordering on the avant-garde, which is very different than people are used to hearing from them. "Salt & Cherries" has a good rock vibe, and the vocals are very reminiscent of Joan Jett in her heyday with the Blackhearts.
The crux of the problem is that this CD is almost too experimental ? there is nothing here that is radio-friendly, or that could be seen as commercially viable in the sense that people want to sing along. "Red Bike" was eerily similar to solo John Lennon, while "You And I" had beautiful imagery, and the vocals were much better suited for this style of song than the previous tracks.
However, there is a noticeable shortage of upbeat, faster tempo tracks, and this is a far cry from Wendy and Lisa's days with Prince's band, the Revolution, in the 1980s. But it is a decent effort all the same.
