Theater critic Ben Brantley responds to James Franco's online rant

New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley has read what James Franco has to say and doesn't seem too broken up about it.

As previously reported, Franco wasn't a fan of Brantley's review of his Broadway production of Of Mice and Men and took to Instagram to complain.

Brantley wrote a poor review of the production, pointing out problems with both leads, Chris O'Dowd plays Lennie, and claiming there was a general lack of chemistry.

In the since-deleted Instagram post, Franco, who plays George in the play, slammed Brantley's review saying that he and the Times embarrassed themselves. "Brantley is such a little b*tch he should be working for Gawker.com," Franco wrote. The actor also claimed that the "theater community hates him."

The New York Observer spoke with the critic and asked him what he thought about getting called a "little b*tch."

Brantley simply replied, "I like Franco's work on film a lot, and he didn't disgrace himself on stage." He added, "I hope he returns to Broadway some day. And of course he's entitled to say whatever he likes about me, as long as it's not libelous, and somehow I don't think 'little b*tch' qualifies."

The Times theater critic admitted that Franco's rant wasn't the worst thing ever said to him. Josh Brolin at one time reportedly said, "I hate that motherf*cker." Brantley noted they sort have become "e-friends" since then.
