Almost a Party Crasher
While in the U.S. Coast Guard in Honolulu, I was told to run the Christmas party for a small installation. Dorothy Lamour of the "Road" movies fame was in town, playing at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. I called her husband manager Col. Howard and invited her to a Christmas party with the boys in uniform. He consented. Then he called H.Q. to confirm and all hell broke loose. He withdrew his offer and there went my mystery guest at the 1958 Pier 4 Coast Guard Christmas party.
