Yes, he really is rude and crabby.
During the 1990s I was working in Albany, N.Y. in a large home improvement center. The department where I worked was called the Design Center, which is where they sold cabinets, window treatments and the like. I was standing in the blind display area, which was adjacent to one of the main aisles of the store. I was waiting on a young couple who wanted to buy custom mini blinds. We were discussing the pros and cons of different types of blinds when an old man walks up to us, interrupts me mid sentence, without excusing himself, and says "Where are the router bits?" I stopped talking and looked at the couple. I said "Excuse me" to them and I pointed down the aisle. "They are in the tool corral, sir." I said. “Straight ahead.” The old man replied "Show me." I said, "Sir, in case you have not noticed, I am working with these people right now. The tool corral is directly ahead of you. There is someone in that area that can help you." He gave me a blank expression and then he turned and walked away, up the aisle, mumbling the whole time. I apologized to the couple. "I am so sorry, I can't believe how rude that guy was." The husband then said, "You know, that guy looked a lot like Andy Rooney." I looked back up the aisle and there he was...and yes it was Andy Rooney! The three of us looked at each other. I said “You are right, that is Andy Rooney!” Now Mr. Rooney was flagging down one of the assistant managers and pointing in my direction. I said to the couple "I bet he's complaining about me because I didn't stop waiting on you and take care of him because he is a celebrity." The man said "Don't worry, if he complains, I will tell your manager exactly what happened," and he gave me his phone number. "Tell your manager to call me if you are reprimanded." I was grateful because I was sure I was going to get in trouble if Andy Rooney complained about me.
I was partially right. Andy Rooney did complain about me because I wouldn't drop my other customers and wait on him. After all, he is ANDY ROONEY! He didn't feel he should have to wait his turn. I was wrong about getting in trouble though. My manager laughed the whole thing off. He told me that Mr. Rooney complained for 20 minutes, not just about me but about everything from the parking (no empty spaces close to the door) to the air temperature in the store (too cold). So if you have ever wondered if Andy Rooney is the crabby old man he acts like on 60 minutes, the answer is a resounding yes.
