Brunch with Johnny, the blond kid in "The Karate Kid"
I was living in Prague for a semester abroad in college, attending a film school there. My friends and I were out to brunch at our favorite ex-pat restaurant. In many places in Europe, if a restaurant is very full, the hostess will seat them at an already-occupied table with available seats. So, my two girlfriends and I were enjoying our waffles when a big group of American guys were seated at our table. The guy next to me struck up a conversation, and I told him he looked like Lando Calrissian from "The Empire Strikes Back." One of the other guys points to the guy next to him and says, "what about him, doesn't he look like Johnny from Karate Kid?" I said no, and they all laughed at me. "Well, it really is him!" I felt stupid, especially since I'd seen "The Karate Kid" a million times like any good child of the 1980s. In my defense, he looked much stockier, and this was before I got laser eye surgery. "Billy Zabka," as I came to know him throughout our meal, was very nice and answered all my ridiculous questions. (Can you still kick ass like you did in the movie? Does Rodney Dangerfield also act like such a freak in real life? Or is he actually funny?)
"Lando" asked me and my friends to be "interns" on a short film they were shooting in Prague. We said sure, but Billy and Lando never called. Bummer. Working with a washed-up B-list celebrity of the 80s would be great on my resume.
