Questions answered.
Shortly after the release of Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band's "Fire Inside" album there happened to be a benifit "Rockin for the Hungry" at a store in Ann Arbor. I heard on a local radio station that someone from the Silver Bullet Band was going to be there. Maybe even Bob Seger. As usual, Bob didn't show. Usually never does. But Alto Reed, who is Bob's most fantastic sax player, did. I had written Bob's manager Punch Andrews before the album came out letting him know that I had a vinyl collection of Bob's stuff. I wanted to keep it that way, if possible. Punch wrote me back and told me he had to force the record company to print 5,000 copies on vinyl because they were mostly going to CD's at that time. When I showed up to meet Alto that Saturday I took one of the two copies I had purchased for him to hopefully sign. When I handed it to him he looked in astonishment at me and asked, "Where did you get this"? I told him I had written Punch and he told me I would have to look hard to find it and that there were only 5,000 copies made on vinyl. Alto then informed me that that didn't happen. They only printed 2,500 copies. He signed it for me and then I asked him some questions about such things as where Bob was when he spoke about being 12 hours out of Mackinaw City in his song, "Roll Me Away." He didn't know right off hand. I also asked him if Bob was ever going to do a remake of his first song "The Lonely One" he didn't know that either. He said he would ask Bob. I thought....yeah...right....he would forget all about it. Much to my suprise I happened to be going up north for the weekend to visit my folks and heard on a Saginaw, Mich., radio station that Tim White from Rolling Stone was going to be interviewing Bob that Sunday on the radio. I got my tape recorder ready and let it run. When I listened to the interview later, Bob had answered all the questions I had asked Alto and even played a small portion of his very first song. It was amazing and I have admired Alto ever since.
