Gone fishin'
I won a contest and I got to go fishing with Bob Izumi, host of the nationally syndicated show "Real Fishin." I'm not a dedicated fisherwoman by any stretch of the imagination. As a matter of fact, it has been decades since I've even held a fishing rod ... except maybe to move one in the shed when I was looking for something else, but I was excited about getting away. The contest included accomodations at Bark Lake, Ontario and a day of fishing with Bob Izumi, and all my meals.
Bob Izumi is a real host. He ferried the winners of the contest (10 of us from all across Canada) to Bark Lake in a deluxe bus that was formerly the campaign bus of former former President Bush. That was pretty interesting. The bus was all black leather and mirrors, with a big screen satellite TV. We were wined and dined to our final destination-- Bark Lake. Bark Lake turned out to be a beautiful secluded spot in Northern Ontario, complete with a lodge and numerous buildings surrounding the private lake. Early October was a beautiful time to be at Bark Lake as the trees were beautifully clothed in gold, crimson and various shades of green leaves.
Bob Izumi and his brother Wayne hosted the contestants. They were warm, friendly and very gracious, just plain nice folks. I lucked out and got to spend the morning with Bob Izumi and another contestant fishing on Bark Lake. Bob's boat was a new model bass boat. It had all the bells and whistles you'd expect for a professional fisherman. Bob gave me and the other contestant much needed tips in how to cast...lol....first he told us exactly how to hold the fishing rod. Who knew there was a correct way to hold the fishing pole?!
The three of us fished and yakked and fished some more. Bob helped straighten our tangled lines and gave us little tips in how to improve our technique. We all caught fish. It was exciting to reel in a pickerel or a small mouth bass. Bob removed the fish from our hooks. It was all catch and release, so no fish suffered!
Bob dashed to and fro over Bark Lake looking for the perfect spot to catch "the big one." We had an idyllic morning out on the lake bundled in our coats and hats to stay warm on that cool, sunny October day. With Bob's help, my fellow contestant and I won first and second place that day in the friendly fishing tournament. I know the young man was tickled pink to win the first place prize of a fishing rod from Bob Izumi and I was thrilled to win the second place prize of a tackle box with oodles of goodies for a fisherman.
Getting to know Bob Izumi and his brother Wayne was a pleasant experience. Fishing with Bob was fun as well as educational. What nice guys!
