The former Prime Minister of Canada, from 1968 to 1984, who passed on in 2000.
All my life, I wanted to visit Montreal, for its culture, its history, its splendor, and its excitement. I finally got the chance in 1990. During my trip, I remarked to friends (whom I was travelling with)that it would be great to bump into the Greatest Canadian of us all, Pierre Trudeau, who by now was in semi-retirement in his beloved city.
So, one bright morning I left our hotel early to take a stroll by myself through the beautiful streets of Montreal. It was a snowy March morning, and I happened upon a newsstand. I began nosing through the newspapers when I noticed a grey-haired gentleman walk up to the newstand. He grabbed a copy of La Presse and began flipping through it. That's when I realized, of all the people standing here next to me, it was Pierre Trudeau himself.
Momentarily stunned, I had to say something, even though I knew Trudeau was an intensely private man and certainly not the type of person who liked to be bothered on the street.
"Aren't you Pierre Trudeau," I finally blurted. Trudeau looked away from his paper, nodded to me, and returned to his reading.
"This is amazing," I added. "I'm from Winnipeg, this is my first trip to Montreal, and I was telling my friends how wild it would be to bump into you, and here you are."
Trudeau didn't say anything, but had a slight grin on his face. The I added, "My friends will never believe me when I tell them I actually met you."
To which Trudeau finally replied, "Why should you care what your friends will or won't believe." He smiled, and paid for his newspaper. "Enjoy your stay in Montreal."
With that, the Greatest Canadian of them all walked away. And I was right. My friends have never believed this story.
