Airport poetry
Years ago, while working at the Delta lounge at JFK airport, I was washing my hands in the restroom, when I realized none other than Dustin Hoffman was right next to me. I'm not the type to freak out at the sighting of a celebrity (growing up in New York, you see enough of them), but this was Dustin Hoffman!
On the counter, I had a book of poetry I was reading on my break from work. He noticed it, and asked if I enjoyed e. e. cummings' work. He said cummings was one of his favorites. We talked for a few minutes, and he offered to send me recordings of speeches given by cummings. I gave him my address, thanked him, and left, expecting absolutely nothing.
Shortly thereafter, however, a package arrived from Mr. Hoffman's secretary with a collection of tapes, and a note saying Mr. Hoffman really enjoyed meeting me!
I was so excited, I actually sent him a couple of my own poems along with a thank you note. Well, I don't think he was very impressed with my poetry, but I was very impressed with him for being so cool, and especially for actually keeping his word to a fan he met in the restroom of an airport lounge.
