Across the Bar from Billy Joel
The Year was 1993. It was my 23rd birthday, and my two friends and I were going to NYC to The China Club. It was a Monday, and I had read that Mondays were the night to spot celebrities there. I was hoping to see someone famous, and I did get my wish!
After a few hours of drinking and dancing, my friends and I moved over to the bar for another round. My friend, JoAnn starting tapping me on the shoulder and saying, "look across the bar; it's Billy Joel!"
I looked up and sure enough, wearing dark glasses and sipping a drink all by himself was the Piano Man himself! He wasn't speaking to anyone and looked like he wanted to be left alone, so we didn't bother him, but I was excited that my goal to see a celebrity was reached.
The next day, the Daily News had reported that Billy Joel was indeed at the China Club alone that evening, and it wasn't too long before his breakup with Christy Brinkley.
