David Allen Coe

Country music star with big body, big voice, and big appetite gets suprized chomping on three big steaks by young radio reporter

In about 1982, I was a transplanted yankee reporter working for WMTZ Radio in Augusta, Georgia. It was my first country music concert and I was wandering the numerous backrooms and hallways of the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center, looking for the rest of the Z-94 radio staff. I finally opened a door that led me into a fairly small room with a table, one chair, and a big man eating three two-inch steaks. I apologized for the intrusion, told him I was looking for the rest of the radio station employees, and he suggested I go to a nearby room and ask directions. The large man was friendly, and pointed me out the room's only other door. I found out a short time later it was David Allen Coe, as he too repeated my story to his manager and others. I am glad I didn't recognize who he was because I probably would have asked for an interview even though he doesn't like to be bothered when quenching his big appetite.
