Me, Billy, and the last cigarette
I was standing outside the Portland Memorial Colesium with my friends waiting to go inside for our very first rock concert in 1986, Billy Idol. There were many guys around us who were dressed up like Billy and some of them were VERY good copies of him! Suddenly there was a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there was a Billy wanna be. "Can I have a cigarette"? he asked me. I was a young teen with an attitude and I snapped "It is my last one!" He just smiled so I rolled my eyes and gave him my last cig. He stood there for a moment and I said "Is there something else?!" He asked for a light. I again made a noise and rolled my eyes but gave him the light. He again stood for a moment before shrugging his shoulders and walking away. My friends were staring after him with their mouths open. I asked them what they were staring at & they said "THAT WAS BILLY IDOL!!!!" I told them they were nuts that there were several guys there dressed like Billy but one friend interupted, "Did you happen to notice he had a british accent?" My stomach was in instant knots as I realized I had just mouthed off to Billy Idol! I turned and looked where he had walked to and he stood with his head peeking out of the side door. He smiled, held up the cigarette in thanks and closed the door.
