Lunch With Garth
Several years ago I was in Salt Lake City, Utah for a conference. Friends of mine and I arrived early so we could check out the sites prior to the start of the conference. Late on a Saturday morning, after touring around Park City, we decided to go to Ogden because we'd heard it had a restored train station. That was a disappointment, but we were hungry and walked a couple of blocks up the street to a small Italian restaurant for lunch. When we walked in, there was a table of about five people by the front window. We were seated fairly close to this table. One of my friends looked over her menu and said to us very quietly: "If I didn't know better, I'd say that is Garth Brooks eating at that big table." I and the other friend casually glanced back to look. I personally didn't know Garth Brooks from Adam but my other friend said yes it did look like it could be him. I did mention to them that I had read in the morning's Salt Lake City paper that Garth had just finished a two-night tour in the city. Well my friends pretty much talked themselves out of this man being Garth.
Near the end of our meal the table of five got up and left through another entrance in what we thought was the back of the building. After we paid our bill, my friends said let's go and started to head to the door we originally came through. I said "now wait a minute, we're going to go through the other entrance and find out if that was Garth Brooks or not." And we then headed out the other entrance where there was a huge green bus parked near it. One of my friends said "Well that makes it for sure, that was Garth!" and proceeded to head back to our car. I said "now wait a minute. This is someone you two are obviously fans of and we're not leaving until we get to see him again." They hemmed and hawed, but I proceeded towards the front of a bus where there was a woman talking to Garth and another man who was waving his arms and looking at me. I thought he was trying to wave us away but when I got up to this man he said "thank god you have a camera, can you please take a picture of my wife and I and Garth and mail it to us?"
He had seen the camera I always carried around my neck when traveling. I obliged, got his mailing information and then when they left, it was my two friends and I. Garth walked up to three of us and said "Didn't we just have lunch together?" I think my two female friends nearly fainted. The four of us had a nice chat and we all took our pictures with Garth. We left when his wife poked her head out of the bus and mentioned that it was time to be going. My friends were eternally grateful for taking that extra step to find out just how nice and friendly a man Garth Brooks is.
