While waiting in line to be taken in to the taping of then TNN's "Be A Star" at the TNN studios and new Grand Ole' Opry House, Vince Gill drove up to the guarded gate to the parking lot for the studio. He was going to appear on "Nashville Now" that night. The other fans in line were all from out of town and really got excited about seeing him when he rolled down his window just a few feet from us. I was very calm and blasé about the sighting because it was very common in Nashville to see the stars shopping in stores, malls, coming out of and in restaurants, etc.
I have seen many like Suzzy Boggus coming out of Subway Subs twice, Kathy Mattea coming out of a different Subway Subs, Vern Gosdin coming out of Subway Subs, Louise Mandrell leaving the mall as I was walking in, etc. They are always so quick in nature sometimes you would have to quickly react and turn to see them for a split second and then have to think for a minute as to who it was. In Nashville, few of the celebrities live behind closed gates and are not hard to access. They shop and dine like everyone else at regular stores and restaurants. No one does their shopping for them and they don't just stick to the expensive elite places to shop and eat, at least not in Nashville as they aren't mugged and chased by crazed fans and paparazzi like they are in LA and NYC. The other citizens get so used to seeing them around town that they don't bother them, other than to say hello if you catch their eye, wanting to let them have their private time and personal space. I would only get autographs during a planned TV taping or concert with backstage passes where the celebrity is prepared to be approached and asked for photos and autographs. The Nashville community shows plenty of respect for those celebrities living and visiting in the area.
All my stories happened between 1989 and 2001 when I resided in Nashville. I will be returning in 2006 so I am bound to have more. Nothing happens here in Clearwater, FL unless you hang out by the "Church of Scientology" center downtown when John Travolta, Jenna Elfman, Lisa Marie Presley, and Tom Cruise are in town or if you happen to spot Hulk Hogan who lives in Clearwater.
