Dinner with Muhammad Ali
My mom and I were eating at Clementine’s in St. Joseph, Michigan. Muhammad Ali and one of his body guards were seated in a booth by the exit. I begged my mom not to embarrass me (or herself) by stopping at their table, but of course she couldn't resist the opportunity. She must have been a combination of "nervous" and "excited", because her approach was more than humiliating...a mere mumbo- jumbo of words, with some "float-like a butterfly, sting like a bee" chant thrown somewhere in the middle! Not wanting to be rude, I stood by my mother’s side at this popular, trendy restaurant, hoping nobody I knew was nearby. After she finally got around to introducing herself, Muhammad Ali asked my mother who I was, and proceeded to tell her what a "beautiful" daughter she had. His body guard invited us to join them. I felt like my face was on fire, it must have turned three shades of red! Humiliated, yet humbled by the compliment, I forced myself to say a quick "hello, nice to meet ya-goodbye" and turned for the door in hopes of making a quick, yet graceful, exit. Instead, I ran smack-dab into a tall pane of glass commonly known as a WINDOW, mistaking it for the door. That was it for my brush with fame. Hope they, as well as my mother, at least got a good laugh out of my clumsy encounter!
