Lost in the parking lot with Derek Jeter!
Last month, I went to the annual University of Louisville Baseball Kickoff Banquet with my friend. I knew approximately where the banquet was to be held, but I wasn't sure which building.
We pull into the parking lot and a big white van parks next to us. Six men in very nice suits get out and head into a direction like they knew where they were going. So we follow them. Low and behold they don't have an access key to get into this building. Apparently, they had no clue where they were going. So we turn around, then my friend grabs my arm and says "that's DEREK JETER!". It sure was! He was with Tino Martinez (who usually is the guest speaker at the banquet) and 4 members of their entourage.
They walked with us to the "real" destination, which was clearly on the OTHER SIDE of the parking lot. So it was a nice walk. When we got into the elevator enclave, Mr. Jeter held the elevator door open for us and said "You can go ahead". Yes, my favorite Yankee Captain stood right in front of me on the elevator and he smelled fabulous!
At the end of the banquet, his P.R. people tried to rush him out of the room away from the crowd. But he had to walk past my table. As people were getting him to sign memorabilia, I had a souvenir that I had him sign. When he handed it back to me, I said "thank you Derek", then he shook my hand and said "It was my pleasure".
Not only is he one of baseball's hottest stars, but he is a complete gentleman as well!
