I'm really me , ain't I?
Late one night, in the early 80's, I was working the switchboard at March Air Force Base, in Riverside, California. I got a call from someone on a secure line, asking for an outside connection to speak with his wife(which we were not supposed to do), stating that he was Bob Hope!I said "Yeh sure",and he went on insisting that he really was Bob Hope- telling me jokes, and stories about making some of his early films, etc..
This went on for about 20 minutes, and the guy had me cracking up so hard that I just had to relent and give him the outside line. As I was about to disconnect my line from his, I heard him say "Hi,Delores - It's me Bob"! Turns out he was staying at March A.F.B. overnight for a next day appearance, and the guy I had literally called a BS artist WAS Bob Hope! I never got a chance to apologize, but I get the feeling he's ok with it, seeing as how we did have a fun talk!
