Vince Gill

A second chance encounter with a shirtless star.

I was lucky enough to meet Vince Gill after a local concert in town. My family and I had photos taken with Mr. Gill. Unfortunately, I was using a new camera and none of the photos turned out. We were bummed to say the least. A few weeks later, George Jones and Conway Twitty were doing a show in town and, at the last minute, Vince Gill agreed to be their opening act. One hour before the concert, I went to the box office and inquired about tickets. I could not believe someone had not shown up to get two second row seats. I quickly purchased the tickets and my mother and I rushed inside to catch the show. We saw Mr. Gill and Mr. Twitty perform their entire show, and Mr. Jones was halfway through his set when we decided to leave.

As we approached the parking lot, a tour bus with the door open was parked near our vehicle and my mom said ‘I wonder if that is Vince Gill's bus, I feel terrible about the other photos not turning out.’ I said, “Who knows, go inside and find out.” Well, I never imagined she would actually do it. My mother walked over to the bus and hopped right on. A few minutes later, she came out and said, ‘We'll wait right here.’ I looked behind her and there stood Mr. Gill with his pants on and a shirt in his hand. He said, ‘I will be glad to pose for a photo with you, just give me a minute to put a shirt on.’

I could not believe it. True to his work, a few minutes later, Mr. Gill came off the bus and posed for a photo. My mom was taking the picture and she was so nervous she did not realize she was standing in the road and a car was coming. Mr. Gill said ‘Ma'am, there's a car coming, you need to get out of the road.’ My mom just stood there. Mr. Gill said, ‘Ma'am, you really need to move, you’re gonna get run over.’ My mom just stood there. Mr. Gill said, ‘Ma'am, I don't want to see you get run over please move.’ Finally, I told my Mom to move it. She just looked around. I had to actually go and grab her by the arm and move her out of the way of the car that was coming. I am happy to say the photo turned out great and we laugh every time we hear a Vince Gill song.
