Rehearsal and dinner
Steven Tyler and a number of musicians and models needed a place in Key Largo to practice for their performance at the Celebration of the Sea Music & Film Festival. My in-laws have a quiet, out of the way place and were asked if they could use it. They agreed.
When Steven arrived, he chatted outside a little and asked for a quiet place to discuss some business. We led them upstairs and walked in with them. My mother-in-law thought we should leave them alone, but I figured if they wanted us to leave, they would ask. They never did.
Steven went outside to discuss some logistics, so Sabrina Barnett's security guard introduced me to Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC. When I think of rappers, I think of the bad guy image of guys talking about killing each other and derogatory comments about women (sorry, just my experience). Not DMC. He was one of the nicest, most polite guys I've ever met.
Afterward, I was able to snap two photos of Steven through the glass door. When he came in, he was sweating like crazy (it was hot in Largo), so he stripped off the shirt and toweled off. I was introduced and we talked for a little while and I asked for a photo. He obliged and as we posed, his legal eagles swooped in to stop him. Apparently, he has trademarked his name and now has "no right" to give autographs or pictures. They said it would take all day to explain all of the legalese.
They wrapped up and he asked to "pee." I directed him to the bathroom and he sang the whole time. We went back downstairs for him to rehearse the only song he would be singing, "Walk This Way". The legal guys came back around and told us that Steven had asked that we all leave while he practiced. As compensation, we were given tickets to the VIP tent for the concert Saturday. Still, it was disappointing. I'm not entirely sure he was the one who wanted us out, though.
When he was done, we all came back in and ate with everybody and just stood around talking. Steven said Tommy Lee had called him and was upset with him for reasons I probably shouldn't get into online.
He wrote ST on his water bottle and left it behind. My in-laws have the water bottle and sweat-soaked towel. And Sabrina left her Fiji water bottle behind with her paperwork and cell phone. We never found the phone, but I did return the bottle and papers. I was told I could keep the water bottle. It makes a fun keepsake in my house. And no, they won't be sold on eBay. I saw Steven again that night at dinner and he remembered me (what a cool thing to be recognized by a star). He talked to me and offered me that picture that his people prevented earlier. He was as nice as they come!
