Ed Kowalczyk - Lead singer of the rock band Live, at Disney World

This happened when my wife and I were vacationing in Disney World for our second anniversary in 1999. So there we we're, just strolling through Downtown Disney's West Side, completely unaware that we were about to experience one of the high points of our vacation. For those who haven't been there, Downtown Disney is simply a big outdoor shopping plaza with stores, restaurants and night clubs, etc. But one thing they don't have is cars, only pedestrians, so we were surprised to see a big purple tour bus on the road just ahead of us. It was around that time that I noticed a sign in front of a club called The House of Blues (which is owned by Dan Aykroyd, of the Blues Brothers). It said "Tonight at 8:30 - LIVE (Sold Out)". My first thought was "I wish I had known they were going to be here so I could have tried to get tickets." Then Lainie (my wife) said, "Maybe that's who's on the bus." I agreed that it was a good possibility, so we stuck around to see where it went.

As we stood there and watched, the bus slowly backed into an opening in the wall, after which the gates were closed and we could no longer see it at all. Just as I decided we would never get to see who was on it, a smaller door next to the gate opened, and people began walking out. We noticed some of them were wearing Live T-shirts, so I thought they were either roadies, or just a group of fans who took a bus down to see the show. Then a big strong-looking bald guy came out, and I thought he was either a professional wrestler or someone's bodyguard. It was then that Lainie asked if I would even recognize any of the guys in the band if I saw them, to which I replied "Only the lead singer, and only if he's still bald." Just then out came this totally ordinary looking guy wearing sunglasses and he also had a bald head. In fact he walked right past us, across the street and into the Virgin records mega-store, while the big man followed a few steps behind. He looked so casual, and walked so easily among the people without drawing a crowd I wasn't sure if it was him or not. I told Lainie that was probably the lead singer (who's named escaped me) but she didn't believe it, so we followed him into the store.

As we watched from a distance, I think the first place he went was the Live section, maybe to see how many copies of their new CD were left on the shelf. Then he continued to browse through the store, and we continued to follow, always maintaining a safe enough distance so the bodyguard wouldn't think we were stalking him. I became increasingly tempted to walk right up to him and say "We're from PA, too," (because they're from York), but I was afraid either it wasn't him, or if it was, that the big guy would wrestle me to the ground before I got too close to him. At one point we even went over to the Live section (after he had moved on) to try to find a picture to verify if it was him, but none of their CD's have pictures of the band on the cover! After a while, he walked outside, and headed back to where the bus was parked. Just before he got there, we saw a crowd start forming around him, and people were getting his autograph and taking pictures. Then he took of the sunglasses and I could tell it was really him. So we walked up, and I took the camera and told Lainie to stand next to him, and we got a great picture. And by some miracle his name just popped into my head and I said "Thanks Ed," and he said "Sure, no problem." It was definitely cool.
