Standing with Don Knotts
Several years back, my husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary by attending a dinner theatre at Stage West in Mississauga, ON. The play that was being performed that night was "Harvey" by Jimmy Stewart and starred Don Knotts in the lead role.
After the performance, we approached the elevator to go upstairs to our room. The elevator was in an alcove and when we approached, Don Knotts was standing there, alone, waiting for the elevator. (He was much shorter than I expected!) The three of us stood together waiting. Mr. Knotts turned to me and smiled - I was too star-struck to say anything! As a child, I watched him many times on the Andy Griffith Show, which was one of my favourite shows. I couldn't believe I was standing right beside him!
The elevator arrived and we got on. It was empty except for the 3 of us. The ride was quiet and when we arrived at Mr. Knotts floor, as he stepped off the elevator, I said "Have a good evening." He turned and smiled and tipped his hat. My heart was pounding!
To this day, I remember what a thrill that was!
