Suddenly Recruited For Acting Role
About 20 yrs. ago I got off a bus on my way to night school. The stop was in the middle of a portion of the street that was cordoned off for a movie shoot. I look through a storefront on the way by and I see Charlie Sheen talking to someone (maybe Oliver Stone). He looks at me then back at the other guy, then back at me again and runs towards the front door and outside and tracks me down. I guess he sized me up as someone short of cash who had nowhere to urgently be. He asks me if I want to make a quick $500. Then he says, "good...listen, you're the guy from...(Marty?), OK?... all you gotta do is look off into space and when I speak you answer "didn't see him" then I look real disgusted and hand you some money which you put into your vest pocket, then you say "no, I mean I really didn't see him," just like that, and then I say I want my money back and you do nothing, just keep looking off into space the whole time, don't act, then I run off and that's it, OK?" In a virtual stupor all I can do is nod throughout.
After a lot of fuss we do the scene once and someone, not Stone, says that's a good one and everyone scatters while I scramble around asking anyone I see how I get paid. Almost everyone says "are you kidding me?" Finally someone, I think Stone's assistant, takes my name after figuring out I'm not union. She says I'll have to join but I never hear anything more about it. (Apparently they'd been waiting a half hour for someone to show just to shoot this one scene and there was a dispute whether it was necessary to begin with.) With that I soon figured that the scene wouldn't make the movie and besides, it also almost certainly would've required filming another one to set it up. In any case I eventually got a check for $369., but from a holding company and not from the movie company so without the scene being in the movie and no credit I can't prove it ever happened.
