Bay City Rollers
Bay City, Michigan is where Madonna was born, but one pop group actually named themselves after my city. In the 70s, a group from Scotland threw a dart at a world map, and it landed on Bay City, Michigan, so they became the "Bay City Rollers." They became quite famous, with songs like "Saturday Night." The city invited them here for "Bay City Rollers Day." I was part of a group of students/fans that worked with some area artists and painted huge murals on the sides of some brick city buildings. The mayor gave them the key to the city, and I was there with the students to show them around and watch as they had their handprints immortalized in cement. It was quite an exciting day. Of course the murals have faded away, and I don't know what happened to the handprints.
