Bruce, Bob and a Beer
In late summer of 1989 I was working as an advertising designer for a small newspaper in Prescott, AZ. It was a slow Friday and the editor came back and excitedly told myself and two female co-workers to head to Matt's Saloon with him to see "the Boss." We just laughed at him and kept working. He said the bartender "Bubbles" had just called to tell him that Bruce Springsteen and a few of his friends had just walked into the bar and he was going to jam with the house band. So, we all hoofed it down to the bar and sure enough, the bar was nearly empty, but through the open door, you could hear guitars being tuned up.
We walked in and sat down in a booth and ordered a round of beers. Within a few minutes, Bruce Springsteen and the house band were playing what turned out to be a long set of Bob Dylan tunes. As it turned out, the house band didn't know any of the Boss' music! Our editor attempted to take some photos of this amazing event, and someone who was traveling with Bruce rushed over and said, "Hey man. Why do you have to do that? Can you put that away. You're going to ruin everything." Out of respect for Mr. Springsteen, our editor laid his camera down on the table.
After the concert, we walked up to the bar to have a final beer, and Bruce Springsteen came up and sat on the stool next to me and ordered a beer. I wouldn't have believed it was him, if I hadn't heard him sing. He was covered with a few days stubble of beard and wearing a lot of road grime, along with his leather biker gear. He smiled and said, "Hi." I thanked him for the music, and said, "My husband will be so jealous that he missed this! He will never believe you were here! Would you mind signing this napkin for him?" He said, "Hey now, if I do that for you, I have to do that for everybody." Nice, but firm. I respected that, told him to have a safe journey, and we all returned to work.
I suspect many of the people I shared this story with didn't believe me, but the National Enquirer carried a story shortly after this happened, relating how Mr. Springsteen gave Bubbles money to help pay for some medical expenses.
