Step Dad and me bonded

My real dad left me, my sister and brother, when I was about nine. My younger sister got cancer when she was seven. My Mom worked and took care of my sister, so I was left as the man of the house. For about two years I took care of my younger brother Dean while my mom worked and took care of my sister.

I went to visit my uncle in 1971, and when I got off the plane, my mom introduced me to a new guy she was with. I acted stupid, trying to be the man of the house, well he spanked me and from that day on I held a grudge. I was so wrong. He was there for my mom, he took care of me and my sister and brother. My sister died in 1972, she was 11. My Step Dad took good care of my Mom. My younger brother Dean got real close to him. I couldn't get close to him. I treated him as a outsider. My mom tried, but nothing would work.

In 1976 we took a trip to Florida. We had a great time. We saw everything. On the trip my step dad tried to get close to me. My mom told him to buy me some music. I was into albums and I would listen to music for hours in my room. We stopped in Memphis. My step dad bought me a wild cherry album and cassette. I really liked them. I saw them in Sacramento, Ca where I lived and I loved them. I was really surprised. We finally had something to talk about.

We stopped at a place called Corky's barbecue. I had my album in the car and my cassette in my pocket. This was the first thing that I remember that he bought for me. I know he bought a lot of things for me for Christmas and my birthday but this meant a lot more. I finally felt that he understood me. We were close from there on. But any way, I went to use the bathroom at Corky's. I went inside and there was Elvis. He told me hi, I asked him if he was him. Because, come on, who meets Elvis in the bathroom. It was him; I told him my mom was a big fan. She grew up in Lubbock, Texas and also Las Vegas, Nev. We walked into the hall. All I had on me was the wild cherry cassette so I asked him if he could sign it. He did, but he had to leave. Elvis left with my cassette.

I went back to my table and told my mom and step dad that I met Elvis, and he signed my cassette, but took off with it. My step dad didn't laugh; he believed me. I was so impressed. I thought it was funny because he said stuff like this happens. I was thinking, yea right -- people always meet Elvis in the bathroom and he takes off with your cassette. He told me he would buy me another cassette. Then Elvis showed up and apologized for taking my cassette. My mom almost shit her pants. He bought our meal and gave us his jacket; my mom still has it. Elvis brought me together with my step dad. We talked the whole way back to Sacramento and it hasn't stopped since.

My mom and step dad are no longer together, but they had a son named Sean, who is a great person, we are so close.
