Jazz Great Talks Jazz with High School Kid
As a member of the Rhode Island Youth Stage Band, I had the privilege of performing at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1989. We actually played before the official start of the show, but still, we were on stage, playing that beautiful venue, in front of the largest crowd we had ever been in front of. Somehow, we were allowed to hang out backstage for the rest of the day.
I not only got to see Branford Marsalis, but got to listen to him talk at length about the state of the genre. I actually spent most of the Spyro Gyra set shooting the breeze with him. To top it off, when I wrote him a follow-up letter, he wrote back with a long letter!
