The Queen of England, The Duke of Edinburgh & The Prince of Wales

A chance encounter in Toronto

The last person in the world I would have expected to see in person was the Queen of England. My husband and I went to Toronto to see The Phantom of the Opera in 1997 for our 15th anniversary. The day we were leaving we got to the train station very early, and hung around outside people watching. After a few minutes the police started to block off the street. I knew the Queen was staying in the hotel across the street from a news broadcast, so I was wondering if she was about to appear. Sure enough, after about a half hour, she and the Duke of Edinburgh came out, waved, and got into a car.

There are a couple of really odd things about this. #1, the British were turning Hong Kong over to China at the time. My sister-in-law, who lived in Hong Kong then, was offended that the Queen could go to Toronto for a race, but didn't show up for the turn over. #2 on a trip to London in 1984, while hanging around in Kensington Gardens trying to decide where to have dinner, a helicopter landed next to Kensington Palace, and the Prince of Wales got out, waved, and walked into the building.

What are the odds of someone from Detroit seeing so many members of the British Royal Family during their lifetime?
